INTRODUCTION

Thanksgiving is a time when we gather with loved ones, indulge in delicious food, and express gratitude for the blessings in our lives. However, in recent years, the focus on food and material abundance during this holiday has led to an altered view of Thanksgiving, often lending people to gluttony and excess. In contrast, I would like to look at Psalm 104, which provides us with a beautiful framework for expressing gratitude to the LORD.

THE ALTERED VIEW OF THANKSGIVING

In today's society, Thanksgiving has become synonymous with lavish feasts and overindulgence. While enjoying a good meal with family and friends is a wonderful way to celebrate, it is essential to remember the true essence of Thanksgiving. Psalm 104 reminds us that thanksgiving is not just about satisfying our physical appetites but about acknowledging and appreciating the Creator of all things.

PSALM 104: ITEMS FOR THANKSGIVING

Psalm 104 is a poetic masterpiece that celebrates the wonders of God's creation. It invites us to look beyond our immediate circumstances and consider the beauty and intricacy of the world around us. Here are a few things that Psalm 104 encourages us to be thankful to the LORD for:

  1. The Majesty of Creation (vv. 1-10): The psalmist marvels at the splendor and diversity of God's creation. From the majestic mountains to the vast oceans, every aspect of nature reflects the glory of its Creator. As we reflect on the beauty of the natural world, we can't help but be filled with gratitude.

  2. The Provision of Life (vv. 11-22): Psalm 104 highlights how God provides for all living creatures. The earth is abundantly filled with food, water, and resources, ensuring that every living being is cared for. This reminds us to be thankful for the sustenance and nourishment we receive each day. So while we may have wandered into gluttony during this holiday, food is still a valid reason to give thanks to the LORD, and even enjoy some pumpkin pie.

  3. The Cycle of Seasons (vv. 19-22): The psalmist acknowledges the rhythm of the seasons, each with its unique characteristics and purpose. From the warmth of summer to the stillness of winter, every season plays a vital role in the grand tapestry of life. We can express gratitude for the changing seasons and the opportunities to praise God each brings us.

  4. The Gift of Work (v. 23): Psalm 104 recognizes the labor and toil of humanity, highlighting the importance of work in sustaining life. Whether we find fulfillment in our careers or in the tasks of everyday life, we can be grateful for the opportunity to contribute in our God-given task of stewarding the earth.

  5. The Presence, Work, and Judgement of God (vv. 24-35): Ultimately, Psalm 104 reminds us of God's constant presence in our lives. The psalmist acknowledges that God is intimately involved in every aspect of creation, sustaining and upholding it by His power. This realization fills us with gratitude for the love and care God extends to us each day.

CONCLUSION

Instead of focusing solely on indulgence and material abundance, let us turn our hearts toward genuine gratitude. Inspired by Psalm 104, maybe even taking the time to pray through the psalm, we can express thankfulness for the majesty of creation, the provision of life, the cycle of seasons, the gift of work, and the abiding presence of God. May this fresh perspective on Thanksgiving enrich our celebrations and deepen our connection with the One who deserves our utmost gratitude.
